Hey guys! In my Saturday Sketching for Animators and Illustrators class we are working on some environments! I figure i would give you guys a peek as to what it looks like and the process of how it came to fruition.
There were just a couple of the ideas i had. To be honest, i had one small fun industrial/fast food revolution idea which i instantly threw away because it wasn't really my main idea (at the time!). Well, my teacher saw it and actually liked the idea! So, it was then i decided to run with it and come up with a couple refined sketches.
Both had their reasons, the bottom one was the first one i worked on, you can probably tell because of all of my scribble notes on there. The original angle was someone looking down from...somewhere? I really hadn't planned that far ahead. Those grave stone looking things were placements for something but i still didn't know what.
The top sketch i worked on second and i wanted to flip the buildings and try adding some more of an industrial punch and i liked it but it still felt weak in my eyes. I ended up basing the main drawing off my original one, the bottom one.
I have little to zero experience when it comes to environments and i had to do some extensive studying with Scott Robertsons How to Draw book. A book i highly recommend for anyone looking to improve.
The next two pieces are draw on artist bond paper sized 14 x17, i made barriers for 11x17. I usually use this paper because its easy to erase when you need to make abrupt changes, you can move around objects if you placed them incorrectly and its light table friendly. I have been working in paper layers for a while now and i enjoy it. One of my teachers refers to it being a super old school version of Photoshop.
Here you can see all of the minor details and ideas from my original sketch come to life. The dome shape stuck around and i felt it would be better suited as an observatory of sorts coming out of the ground. Almost on the same lines of the Technodrome from TMNT but perhaps not as deadly. My teacher said we could stylize it and i have been craving to gain a better cartoony understanding. Artists like Skottie Young and Bob Guthrie are becoming some of my favorites and inspirations. The cowboy had behind the huge building is, yes borrowed from the Arbys logo. I liked the shape and thankfully im not selling this as an original idea. Even with the small logos on the side of the building i looked up some of my favorite places to dine and i would try to create something using their logo as a basis.
I changed the perspective because i wanted the viewer to feel more...grounded? That may not be the right term but i wanted it to feel as if you were walking up to this destination you see and take in all of the area. I feel like it would be a tad bit overwhelming if i were to see this in the real world.
I looked up and practiced some box trucks. Nothing really fancy to be said about it. I had to practice wheels for a bit because i utterly sucked at them. Im not saying these are masterpieces but they are a hell of a lot better than the original sketch ones i would draw. I do plan to keep practicing drawing tires and vehicles so look forward to them soon!
And here is the final design and it was a doozy. I layered all of the art bond paper on my light table and went to town. Had to make sure to accent some of the areas to show where the light source is. I hope its clear to viewers. I added mountains to add some more depth and take up some of the empty sky that was there. Some fun and fluffy clouds because why not. I added a tree in the foreground to help push back the truck and everything else. I was worried it wouldn't work but its growing on me. I added some dying trees in various spots because actually my original idea was to have it be snowing everywhere, but i felt it really would have been too much for the readers eyes to take in so i opted not to do it.
Overall im impressed with myself because ive never really draw any true environment, i have dabbled but i never sat down and just worked on one. I honestly want to do more. Its great fun and practice. I hope i get a decent grade. At least a B- haha.
Also, if you are curious the name of the place is Blk Shk Burgers (Black Shack Burgers). I hope it is random, i may google to see if its really a place.
Hope you enjoy my art! See you next time!
Have a good day!
