Character Design Assignment

I am sure this will be the first of many character design assignments that i upload to show for you guys.

Now this assignment was all about cafe to characters. Taking people that we viewed in cafes, Walmarts, restaurants, etc and turning them into our own original characters.

Meet Valentino!

After sketching several people i had an idea of a scientist character that worked for the mafia. I also wanted him to have a specific Saturday morning villain look, so i added the big hair style and a zany outfit to match. At the end of the day i took an idea of my friend and kept tweaking him into what you see now. Below i will show off some of the original designs for you all to see.

Final thoughts: I thought this was a blast of an assignment. The one prior was to do 20 pages of just people so that we could get used to drawing them and i enjoyed just viewing and dabbling in my sketch book. Its a fun and natural feeling to just be free, view and draw what you see, sometimes i feel gestures from my head are too stiff and i want to stay loose and organic. So it was even more fun now that we could use the people we are looking at and turn them into something new by using them as a jump off point. I even had a couple of people come up to me and say "That doesnt look like me!" and i would always respond with "You were just a jump off point."
It was very fun to play around with ideas such as head sizes and shapes. I will be uploading all of my design pages very soon (quite a few of them) and i will put them in a new post. Stay tuned!
