Photo Bashing Character Design Assignment

Here we are, this is the final for my Intro to Digital Painting class. I must admit i have learned so much and i feel ive gain a better understanding and respect for the digital medium. I used to be someone that would make silly excuses as to why people preferred digital art. Now i see the error in my ways. Both traditional and digital are viable mediums to craft and produce art. This entire assignment used both of those to get to where it ended. From the silhouettes to the gestures to the line art, color, value and final rendering. Its an amazing process that was very fun to focus and work on. I used to get frustrated while doing digital art but now its not as bad since i took the time to learn. I am thankful to have a great professor that taught us painting as well as life lessons that go along with being a digital painter.

So without further adieu i present to you all, my robotic dinosaur creature.

Here are the initial silhouettes that i used, there were alot more from my sketchbook but these were the ones i decided to showcase. I knew i wanted a dinosaur that mimicked my other dino design (from my natural history museum visit) but this one i wanted to turn it into a robot like the assignment wanted.  The human designs some may recognize as my Valentino character that i made for my other class. With this assignment i wanted to develop him further by adding some robotic components.

Here are some of the variations that i played around with. I played with different robotic arm ideas as well as dinosaur components such as spikes and ligament parts.  Huge influence to the tyrannosaurus rex and some of the Pokemon characters.

Tweaked the secondary lighting

Here is the final rendering of the robosaur. I'm really proud of it, i spent several days working on it and i enjoy how it looks. I wish i knew how to design toys because id like to see this in a 3-Dimensional setting.

I hope you guys enjoy!
See you over the summer where i practice more character designs with photobashing as well as landscape/environment practice!

Later Days!
